The name combines "yooper," a colloquial term for residents of michigan's upper peninsula, with the suffix "lite" denoting stone. Its fluorescence comes from Sodalite's response to ultraviolet wavelengths, which excite electrons and produce visible light emissions. Yooperlite measures approximately 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs hardness scale and displays a dull to vitreous luster when polished.
